INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING:
Counselling is a collaborative effort between the counsellor and client. Professional counsellors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems that cause emotional difficulties. Deciding to see a counsellor is a personal choice. Some of the reasons people seek the support of a professional counsellor may include learning ways to:
-
improve communication and coping skills,
-
strengthen self-esteem,
-
manage anxiety, stress, and depression
-
navigate the challenges associated with life transitions
-
promote self-care and work toward optimal mental health.

What to Expect:
There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to how long to stay in counselling. Some people feel better after just a few sessions and are ready to move on. Others need more time and may require long-term care based on the seriousness of their mental health concerns. On average, people meet with a counsellor over a 3 to 6-month period of time. For more serious mental health issues, you could spend up to a year with your counsellor. A counsellor’s primary aim is to help you build your own resources, strengths, and skills that will allow you to successfully manage on your own.

How to Access Individual Counselling Services:
-
Bridges CHC primary care clients can ask their health care provider to make an internal referral to one of our counsellors for individual counselling.
-
Residents of Fort Erie, Port Colborne or Wainfleet can ask their family doctor/nurse practitioner to complete this,
Professional Counselling Referral Form, and fax to Bridges CHC; self-referrals not accepted.

GROUP PROGRAMS
Group programs, presentations, and workshops are open to everyone in the community at no cost and no referral is needed.
